Situated at the intersection point of three large markets, the European Union, the space of the former Soviet states and the Middle East, Romania promises to follow the footsteps of India and Ireland as a success model in the development of the IT sector.
Majority of the big players like Intel, Amazon, Adobe, HP, IBM, Nokia, Microsoft, Oracle, Siemens, Motorola, Alcatel, Solectron, or Infineon have already understood this situation and have developed profitable activities benefiting from the great opportunities offered by this new market.

The business environment these companies activate in is a new and dynamic one resulted from the changes that took place in the 90s, but which benefits from a long and valuable tradition in mathematics and informatics. 10 years before Norbert Wiener, the Romanian genius Stefan Odobleja has foreshadowed the bases of cybernetics through his work "Consonantal Psychology", edited in Paris, and one of his concepts that appear for the first time in this work is that of "feed-back".
The history of research in the Information Technology field situates the realization of the first Romanian computer and the first Romanian computer network, among the first realizations of this type in the whole world, even under the conditions of the technological embargo imposed on the communist countries.

The great advantage of the Romanian IT industry consists in the renowned quality and creativity of the young specialists, quality proved by the constancy they win first place at most mathematics and informatics international competitions, or at the world inventors’ exhibitions.

Annually, The University educational system prepares over 8000 specialists in this area, which makes Romania be mentioned in the international statistics as having the largest density of specialists and at the same time having a very advantageous price/performance ratio.
Public University education is organized in 29 cities with 59 education institutions (universities).
Private university education is organized in 174 colleges.

Romania holds the fifth place among the countries of the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa) and the eleventh place in the world within the Cisco Networking Academy program, with a total of approximately 3.000 students inscribed and 105 local Cisco academies.
In 2001 the first Ericsson academy in Romania was inaugurated and in 2002 Autodesk made, for the Romanian universities, the biggest donation in the world - 64 Mil USD in software products.

Knowledge of the English language of all the IT specialists from Romania, a significant German minority together with numerous schools in German, as well as the links with the French, Spanish and Italian languages, due to its Latin origins make the linguistic barriers seem almost inexistent in Romania’s case.

  • √ SIVECO Romania receives Gold Winner title at eLearning Awards 2010 competition for The Romanian IT-based Education System (SEI), in the category "Best e-learning project securing Widespread Adoption".
  • √ After the best travel application reward received by Google in December 2009, the application developed by iQuest is once again internationally recognised. Within the Mobile App World 2010 event organised in London between 19-20 October, Trip Journal was chosen as the best application in the "Excellence in Design" and "Best paid for app" categories.
  • √ Romsys is the only enterprise in Central East Europe, which has received the certification "Star Supplier" from the American corporation Lockhead Martin.
  • √ In 2003 SIMEDA, a Romanian-German company, was awarded the World Java Champion prize for the best wireless application by portal Handango.
  • √ The European Commission has declared SOFTWIN as the most innovative high-tech company in Eastern Europe. The software Bit Defender Professional has been declared as "the most innovative product" by 18 European academies.

Over 7,000 software-producing companies activate in Romania located mainly in the great University centers, Bucharest, Timisoara, Cluj, Craiova, Brasov and Iasi.

One of the most important recognition of the competitiveness of the Romanian companies is offered by the Microsoft acquisition of RAV product of GeCAD, for its utilization in the Microsoft Security Solutions.
In the past years (2008-2010), the annual rate of growth of the Romanian IT companies exceeded 20%, and that of export 25%, in the case in which the GDP’s growth, due to the recession, was negative.

One of the great challenges of the current stage is that of the mobile telephony and especially of content development. The Romanian business environment is profiled as an exceptional one having implemented almost all the international standards of mobile telecommunications.
In the 2010 edition of the "State of the Internet" report made by the Akamai company, Romania (with a medium speed of 6.3 Mbps) ranks first in Europe and forth in the world after the medium internet connection speed, with the top three spots being South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan.

  • √ The eAgriculture solution developed and implemented by SIVECO Romania at the Payments and Interventions Agency for Agriculture (APIA) received the title of "Winner of the European IT Excellence Award 2010” in the Vertical Market category
  • √ Romania and Japan received The Global Information Technology Excellence Award for the “e-Government Initiative”. The distinction was awarded by WITSA (World Information Technology and Services Alliance) during the World Congress on Information Technology, on Thursday, May 20, 2004.
  • √ The National Electronic System (www.e-guvernare.ro) was the only European e-Government application that received the World Summit Award (WSA) at the World Summit for Information Society (WSIS), which takes place in Geneva between 10 and 12 December 2003.

The area’s legislative framework is fully harmonized with the European Union’s recommendations, all the important laws being already approved: Copyright Law, Electronic Signature Law, Electronic Commerce Law, the Law concerning personal character data processing; the protection of private life in the sector of telecommunications, etc.

The Romanian Government efforts in developing e-Government have received international recognition in various opportunities, proving that Romania is one of the world leaders in bringing IT technology in the public administration field.
